2011 Audi A8 L arrives with 500-hp W12, seating for a king-maker

2011 Audi A8 L

Audi is pulling out its biggest gun yet for the Beijing Motor Show, and while the big news for the A8 L might be the 6.3-liter W12 and the sedan's longer wheelbase, it's the rear seat accommodations that have us frothing at the mouth.

Seriously, just look at it.

With an overall length of nearly 17 and a half feet, the A8 L is almost a half-foot longer than its standard sibling, with a wheelbase of 10.24 feet. Those extra inches are put to good effect, with an interior that's enough to make a Maybach look downright spartan.

Open the lengthened rear doors and occupants are greeted by acres of leather, a full-length center console and two power-adjustable, heated and ventilated seats that not only move fore and aft, but include adjustments for cushion depth, lumbar support and seat back angle. Ten remote-controlled air-bladders massage your cares away, and if the front passenger seat – with its power-adjustable folding ottoman – cramps your style, you can move it forward with the flick of a switch.

The standard four-zone automatic climate control is manipulated by no less than 25 adjustable motors, and the massive center tunnel contains everything from a folding table to a refrigerator. It's all first-class, from the ambient lighting to the Valonea leather, and when the time comes to put the laptop away, crank up the 1,400-watt, 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System and enjoy a movie on one of the two 10.2-inch LCD displays.

If you're ready to give your chauffeur a rest, take solace in the fact that the W12 puts out 500 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque through Audi's new eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive. The result is a remarkably quick 4.9-second run to 60 and a electrically-limited top speed of 155 mph.

The W12 will be the standard engine at launch, with a few diesel and petrol-powered engines available further down the line. We'd expect pricing for the A8 L to be revealed shortly after its official debut later this month.

Panzer on Wheels: Audi Unveils the Armored 2011 A8 L Security

As any self-respecting luxury car manufacturer, Audi is also offering its customers BRVs or Bullet Resistant Vehicles, with the latest such model being the W12-powered 2011 A8 L Security. Set to go on sale in late summer, this...panzer on wheels will also be available with another, as of yet unspecified powerplant, starting from 2012.

To the untrained eye, the 5.27 meters (208 inches) long sedan is almost identical to the standard A8, but looks are definitely deceiving as the Security is said to comply with the strictest standards in ballistic protection and can even withstand an explosion and still offer adequate protection for its passengers.

The armored sedan is built in roughly 450 hours in a special facility at the Neckarsulm plant in Germany, where the use of cell phones is prohibited in order to prevent any technology leaks.

At the heart of the A8 L Security is the Audi Space Frame (ASF) aluminum body, which holds a safety cell built using extremely tough materials, such as hot-formed armored steel, aramide fabric, ceramics, special alloyed aluminum and multilayer glass. Many of these overlap at the joints for added protection. The safety cell alone weighs 720 kg (1,587 pounds), but engineers didn’t stop there.

The side sills have also been reinforced, complemented by the armored floor, 300 kilograms (661 lbs) of special glass with polycarbonate coating and strengthened doors that weigh an additional 360 kg (794 lbs).

In case of an attack, the optional emergency exit system, built-in fire extinguisher system and smoke extractor can provide additional protection.

The A8 L Security is powered by a 6.3-liter W12 engine, which churns out 500HP and 625 Nm (461 lb-ft) of peak torque. Despite the added weight, the direct-injected naturally aspirated unit is capable of propelling the vehicle from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a very respectable 7.3 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 210 km/h (131 mph). Power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and the company’s trademark quattro permanent all-wheel drive system.

With its projected average consumption of 13.5 lt/100 km (17.4 US mpg), the armored luxo-barge needs 3 liters of gasoline less than then the previous 450HP model. Furthermore, the second engine is said to further reduce consumption to 10-11 lt/100 km (23.5-21.4 US mpg), which could point to a diesel powerplant.

To better cope with the extra weight, the chassis, brakes and electronic control systems have been revised, while the 19-inch forged wheels are shod in high load index tires that allow the vehicle to continue traveling at speeds of up to 80 km/h (50 mph) even if tire pressure is lost.

Inside, the A8 L Security offers the same levels of quality and comfort as any 2011 Audi A8 and can be equipped with a bevy of high-tech optional features, ranging from the state-of-the-art Bose sound system to the fast UMTS Internet connection module.

Audi To Make First Appearance at SEMA

The (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, Nevada is just around the corner

Every year tuners and manufacturers meet to show of their latest and greatest (and sometimes wackiest) custom creations. This a premier place for aftermarket products and tuners to debut their wares.

Manufacturers are in on the game too with companies such as General Motors and Ford consistently making big appearances.

Audi has never attended the show previously. However, with the brand’s footprint in the United States growing, this year is different.

Audi’s presence at the show will center around three things: the aftermarket, with new “Audi After Sales products and technology,” a demonstration of the Audi Autonomous TTS Pikes Peak and a custom Audi R8 Spyder by STaSIS Engineering.

We think it is great that Audi is making an appearance, and it only serves to demonstrate how the brand expanding into new areas.

We look forward to seeing what is in store for Audi at the SEMA show. Stay tuned! (pun intended)

Tire Review: Nexen N8000 On Audi A4 1.8

Cheap tires anyone? The Red Audi A4 1.8TFSI S-line that I last wrote about was previously running some pretty good Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tires. Sometime after writing the article about its exhaust system mod, the A4′s proud owner – Zairul – took a good look at the A4′s tires as he had to take a long, 1,000km round trip for an upcoming festive holiday. That long hard look translated to a requirement of new threads. Another round of extremely good, but hard riding Michelins or something else?

You see, Zairul reckoned that the Michelin Pilot Sport 2 made his Audi suffer from a harsher ride than what was expected. The Audi basically came on these 245/40/18 tires, which gave fabulous grip, wet and dry. It however had one drawback, it made the ride slightly stiffer than necessary especially when it wears down by around 50%. This was even when the A4′s suspension setting was in ‘auto’ mode and if toggled into ‘dynamic’, the ride becomes nearly as bad as a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. Which is very unbecoming for an Audi, that is basically used as the car Zairul use for his daily commute and also as family transport on outings.

Of course, the tires were Michelin Pilot Sports 2 (pictured above) and they can’t be that bad. They’re not actually, but when you factor in the price, ride, grip and then handling you’d know that the Michelins are pricey, they ride badly when worn as it has ultra stiff sidewalls, grips like its on rails and is very predictable on all road conditions. So it performs slightly terrible for the first two items and the latter two fabulously. The dilemma Zairul now faced was whether to buy a new set of Pilot Sports or try something else.

And try something else he did. Some members of the Malaysian Audi Club had posted on the forum, praising a tire called the Nexen N8000. These were Korean made tires that were half the price of the Pilot Sports 2 (which were about US$330 per piece) and yet according to the club members performed extremely well. So curiosity got the better of Zairul and one weekend we decided to get the Nexen N8000 fitted on the A4. The tire is Nexen’s flagship tire and somehow its thread pattern surprisingly looks like a Continental Sport Contact 3, albeit slightly wider. It also comes with XL or Extra Load rating for added durability.

It was worth it. Immediately after leaving Quicksave Auto Boutique, an official Nexen dealer located in Subang Jaya, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, the car felt transformed and Zairul commented that the A4′s ride felt more like what a European sedan should be. I happen to agree with him. He then added one more important fact that I had deliberately left out till now. The tire noise made by those Michelins was quite loud over time. “I’ve always hated the ride comfort and noise of the PS2s that my car came with. The (N8000s) were really quiet, in fact quieter than even smaller sized tyres that I’ve tried before on my other rides.”

This actually worried him a bit. His brain was saying that “It’s quieter coz it grips lesser!” but upon trusting his heart, decided to hold his thoughts for the running in period of the tires. Anyway, he liked how it rode and how silent it was compared to the Michelins. Sitting beside him I somehow agreed with what he said as it really was quieter and much more comfortable than before. These were tires half the price of the Pilot Sports and we also thought that it also has half the grip if you looked at how big the grooves were on the N8000. It may be 245series tires, but it looked like it had a contact patch as large as a 195series tire.

It must be down to the compound and not only the contact patch as after the 400 or so kilometers Zairul reported that it started to grip fabulously. On the day we changed the tires he actually belted the A4 through a few corners, from the passenger seat I noticed that he had slightly less grip than before. On a sweeping corner the car slightly oversteered as we powered our way into the corner. Midway through, the attitude changed and the whole car four-wheel drifted a tad bit before straightening out. The car felt safe, predictable through the corners even with little grip as the tire still had a thin layer of mold release compound (MRC) from its manufacturing process. This is something all new tires have and we knew that actual grip as well as cornering limits wouldn’t be made known until the MRC wears out.

The N8000s takes close to 400km to be fully run in and Zairul reported tons of grip, both in the wet and dry after that period. Grip wasn’t the only good thing about this tire. It seems to have pretty high limits and no sudden break in traction. It is predictable at its limit as when it does let go, it lets go smoothly enough for the driver to try catch the car back. It is of course quiet too (noise went up ever so slightly after the running in period, but negligible to most drivers). It rides well and the only trade-off from not using Pilot Sports 2 is that the N8000 has slightly lesser grip. “ About 80-90% as good as my old PS2s, which is acceptable since its a good 50% cheaper!” exclaimed Zairul when we met for a cup of tea a few weeks later.

Would he buy these tires again? “If I have to buy tyres again now, YES I would.” said Zairul. “Why? Because no other tyre in 245/40/18 category would give as great bang for buck.” He continued, “Half the price of the PS2s with better comfort and ride. I dont mind if it grips like 10% less. I’ll leave that to my two hands to figure it out and besides, I’m quite sure that they will grip a lot better than the PS2s in the rain.”

So what’s the verdict on these Nexen N8000 tires? I have to say that it’s the performance bargain of the year. It’s actually that good that I got myself a set for my own car. On my little All-wheel drive Impreza 1.6TS (on 215/45/17 series, pictured below) it basically outperformed the Yokohama A-Drive R1s that I used previously. It was more predictable compared to before, it really is quieter, gripped better even in the wet (when it rains down here in Malaysia, it really pours – tropical thunderstorms and all) and also gripped so much better in the dry. Understeer is a predominant trait in any All-wheel drive, but with these tires, it can be felt only at much higher speeds. Like a more expensive tire would. You think the tire has given up but when you turn in more you still find some grip. Furthermore, its ride is as good as the Yokohamas and it costs pretty much the same as the Yokos, which were mid-range tires in the Yokohama tire hierarchy.

I’ve already covered a good 2,500km since the tire change and it has performed admirably. Zairul has covered about the same sort of mileage and has no complaints too. The only thing now is to wait and see on the N8000′s performance when tire wear sets in or how long its tire life is. But at the moment, it’s all fine and dandy with those Nexens.

The Nexen N8000 may not be the out and out track day tires like the Toyo R888 or the Advan Neova AD07s that most specifically use for attacking Sepang or some other track. These N8000s are like Pirelli P-Zeros or the Pilot Sports mentioned above. Ultra High Performance road tires for an enthusiast to belt it out on good B-roads. These N8000s are NOTHING like those cheap tires you find from China or even Taiwan, if you get what I’m trying to emphasize over here. It looks like the Koreans have actually come up good again, like those Ventus tires that Hankook makes but at a cheaper price. The prices of Ventus tire have been rising until it isn’t the performance bargain like before – It looks like Nexens are now the bang for buck tires instead of Ventus (in Malaysia that is).

Audi Reportedly Says No To RS Model SUVs,

Let’s see: Audi TT-RS and RS5 heading to the United States, S7 and RS7 Sportback in the works, R8 GT and the possible (make that likely) production of the Quattro Concept.

Those are a few of the Audi performance products we’ve seen recently. With that list, is there any Audi performance project they will say no to? Apparently, yes – if it has to do RS SUV or crossover models.

BMW held out on this issue for quite some time, never affixing its M badging onto a SUV or crossover until the X5 M and X6 M. Audi’s RS badging is reserved for the upper crust of its performance lineup, taking it even further than S-Line or S.

The report comes from Autoblog.it who says the policy at Audi, set by technical chief Stephan Reil, is that its crossover models will not wear the RS badge.

This has to do with the decision that these large and inherently non-performance vehicles will never offer true performance. Apparently Porsche, which is now under the same roof, didn’t get the memo with the Cayenne.

Normally we would think it could have something to do with the desire to eliminate competition between Audi and Porsche. Given the recent approvals of performance models at Audi though (such as the R8 GT) we would have to rule that out.

If true, do you think Audi has made the right decision on this? Will an SUV or crossover ever be fun to drive? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Hit the Slopes in Style with Audi Carbon Ski

If you're looking to add some style to your winter-time outdoor activities, you may want to take a look at these cool skis from Audi. Initially designed and developed as a concept study at the Audi Concept Design Munich, the Carbon Ski is now heading for production with the Ingolstadt-based automaker estimating that it could be available for sale as early as this year.

As its name implies, the Audi Carbon Ski is made out of carbon fiber for reduced weight as well as optimal stiffness. More precisely, a cab of high-strength carbon fiber encloses layers of aluminum and titanium, as well as a wood core. The result is 170cm-long ski that tips the scales at 1,550 grams. According to Audi, the ski weighs 200 grams less than comparable models.

“As a long-time partner and sponsor of the German Ski Association, a ski produced by Audi is a logical consequence of this partnership. This is how the Audi Carbon Ski concept came about. And the ski’s brilliant handling characteristics have been confirmed by professionals from the sport,” said Wolfgang Egger, Head of Design for the Audi Group. “The serial-production ski was able to borrow from the concept study, and it features outstanding technical properties. At the same time, its minimalist design underscores the technical nature of the carbon.”

The Audi A8 Says, "Long Live the T-Shifter!"

When Hyundai launched the i30 small car on the Australian market, it marked the end of not only the Excel/Accent lineage down under but also the end of the automatic T-shifter. The Accent, a subcompact design available in either a four door sedan or five door hatchback body style, was the last car sold here to feature the venerable (if archaic) T-shaped automatic gear stick.

The T-shifter was born in the 1960s, as American automakers moved away from the steering column mounted automatic and towards a system that reduced complexity and design differentiation between its automatic and manual models. As the ‘80s moved into the ‘90s, automakers - for whatever reason - moved away from the T-shift and toward the semi-ubiquitous, upright “drumstick” shifter.

It seems that the T-shifter is back, at least for one car. The new Audi A8’s ergonomically friendly, chunky automatic gear shift has that distinct T-shaped that many of knew and loved from the pre-‘90s. Some bloggers believe that the automotive behemoth’s unique choice of shifter will influence other carmakers to return to the classic T. Personally, I’m not convinced. Feel free to leave your comments below if you disagree, or have some fond T-shifter memories to share.

Nielsen: Chevy's Miss Evelyn the Most Watched Ad Ever, but VW's Little Darth Varder was the Super Bowl Favorite

The numbers are in for last week's Super Bowl event and they show that the winner is General Motors with its Chevrolet’s spot, “Miss Evelyn’s Wild Ride”. According to Nielsen, an estimated 119,628,000 viewers watched two guys describing a woman’s wild ride in a silver Chevrolet Camaro making it the most-watched commercial ever. The previous record holder was a Doritos ad from 2010 with 116,231,920 viewers. GM's winning streak continued with the Chevy Cruze ad that came in second with 119.3 million views.

However, despite the record viewing number, Chevy's lovely ladies couldn't beat Volkswagen's little Darth Vader in the Passat ad for the most favorite commercial of the game with a Nieslen likability index of 186 (the average score for the Super Bowl ads is 100, meaning VW's Passat ad was almost twice as liked as the average commercial).

The German firm's second TV spot starring the Beetle was the 6th most favorite ad [146 score], while Chrysler's 200 with Eminem, 8th [138 score] and Audi's A8 10th [127 score]. You can watch the ads after the jump.

Geneva Preshow: ABT Adds Style and Power to New Audi A7 Sportback

Less than month after ABT announced its plans to unveil its tuning take on the new Audi A7 Sportback at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, the Volkswagen Group specialist has shared the first photos and details on its available packages.

The rather modest cosmetic upgrades include a front apron along with discreet side skirts and a rear apron that makes space for the new rectangular-shaped quad tail pipes. The luxury fastback's stance can be further enhanced with a lowering kit and a choice of various alloy wheels available in sizes from 19- to 21 inches.

ABT Sportsline also offers a variety of power kits for the A7's range of engines. Starting with the popular in Europe 3.0-liter V6 TDI, after the German firm's engineers tweak the turbo diesel unit, power jumps from 245HP to 282HP, while a second stage kit that brings an in-house turbo charger can boost the TDI's output to 310HP and 610Nm or 450 lb-ft of peak torque. For the gasoline lineup, ABT's offerings are limited for the time being to the 3.0-liter supercharged V6, which gets a jump from 300-horses to 410HP.
