2012 Buick Regal gains eAssist Light Hybrid System, Returns 37MPG Highway

Buick today announced that the second model in its lineup to feature the eAssist “light electrification” system is the 2012 Regal, and it will be officially unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show this week. According to the automaker, estimated fuel economy is 26 mpg city/37 mpg highway, while the overall improvement over the standard 2011 Regal fitted with a four-cylinder gasoline engine and six-speed transmission is 25%.

This is enough to beat competing models such as the Acura TSX, which returns 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

“Buick’s eAssist technology means customers don’t have to trade a premium driving experience for efficiency”, said Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick marketing. “We believe Regal and LaCrosse with eAssist provide more logical and affordable choices, compared to other hybrid midsize and full-size luxury sedans”.

The eAssist system comprises a 115V lithium-ion battery and 15-kilowatt induction motor-generator, which is mounted to 2.4-liter direct injection four-cylinder powerplant in place of the alternator. Providing both motor assist and electric-generating functions, eAssist also reduces fuel consumption through regenerative braking, automatic engine shut-off when the vehicle is stationary and fuel cut-off during deceleration.

The powertrain includes a next-generation Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic transmission as well, with reduced spin losses and higher gearing that further improves fuel economy. The system’s combined output is rated at 182HP (136 kW).

Finally, engineers optimized the car’s underbody aerodynamics and opted for 17-inch lightweight alloys and low rolling resistance tires.

The 2012 Buick Regal eAssist will go on sale in the USA this fall.

Buick Unveils 2012 Regal GS

Because any time Buick makes a high-performance car with the “Regal” nameplate attached, it has that to live up to. It’s an unfortunate comparison for Buick’s new Opel Regal, but it’s not necessarily a valid one. The whole automotive world knows the Grand National was awesome – a turbocharged, tire-smoking musclecar that liked a steady diet of Corvettes and 5.0 Mustangs. The new hot-rod Regal GS is not the drag-racing Darth Vader-mobile some of us might wish it was. But it is a high-tech, thoroughly modern turbocharged sports sedan – it just happens to have a Buick badge.

It is pretty. The Regal is a carbon-copy of the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia, only with a Buick grille slapped in place. The GS slots in at the top of the line above the regular 2.4L and the 2.0L Regal CXL Turbo model. It’s not hard to tell the Regal was styled on the other side of the Atlantic from us – taut, compact lines pulled tight over the fenders make it the anti-Buick. The GS inherits the badass OPC/VXR bodykit, with the air intake/fangs up front giving shades of Isuzu VehiCross, and the rectangular dual exhaust tips integrated into the rear bumper. It makes the handsome Regal look more aggressive, without crossing the “boy racer” line of taste.

Under the hood, the GS uses a higher-output version of the Regal Turbo’s 2.0L four-cylinder. It’s a thoroughly modern engine: all-aluminum construction, dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder with variable valve timing on intake and exhaust cams, high-pressure direct injection, and a turbocharger and intercooler. Power output is up to 255bhp from the Turbo’s 220bhp, but the torque output is more impressive: 295lb-ft of torque is quite a lot from a 2.0L, and the torque peak is spread between 2500-4000 rpm. For now, the only option on the GS will be a six-speed manual transmission, although a six-speed automatic will be available later. Imagine that – a Buick without an automatic transmission even as an option.

The major difference between the production GS and the concept from last year is what’s missing: the Haldex IV AWD with electronic rear LSD. The production GS will sadly be front-drive only. GM has fitted it with the HiPer strut front suspension, which they say reduces torque steer and maintains negative camber under cornerning. The reason for the omission of AWD? To keep costs down, as well as the belief that the Regal GS doesn’t need it as badly as the Insignia VXR, which has a nasty 325bhp turbocharged Saab V6 instead of the four. The HiPerStrut suspension has gotten positive reviews in it’s other applications, so don’t write it off just yet.Other performance goodies abound. The Regal GS has IDCS (Interactive Drive Control System), which is another one of these “pick your driving style” switches that modify throttle input, shock settings, steering response, etc. There’s a normal and a sport mode, as well as – get this – a GS mode. That’s a bit tacky. The GS has continuously variable dampers at all four corners, and 19″ split five-spoke wheels cover some impressive braking hardware. 14″ 4-piston Brembo rotors in front are matched with 12.4″ single-piston Brembo rotors to bring the car to a halt. A 20″ version of the same wheel is optional if you like having additional unsprung mass to slow the car down and make it turn and brake worse.

The GS looks like a nice place to spend time inside, just judging from the pictures. It looks like a step down from the Saab 9-5 (it’s chassis mate) but it’s smaller and less expensive. The GS gets a flat-bottomed steering wheel, metal pedal covers, black trim and satin-finish accents. There is no shortage of gizmos to keep you amuse, either. Keyless entry with pushbutton start, a 320 watt 9-speaker Harmon/Kardon sound system with XM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, front and rear parking sensors, Bixenon headlamps, and heated leather-wrapped front sport seats with 12-way power adjustment. The interior quality and design on the Regal looks sort of like how GM should have been making interiors all along; attractive and well thought out will make it a place you might actually want to spend time.

That’s about it for details on the GS at this time. We do know it has estimated EPA numbers of 19/29 city/highway with the manual, and GM says it should do 0-60 in under 7 seconds. There’s no suggested price tag yet, but they do say it should be hitting show rooms some time in the second half of 2011. If you’ve always wanted a Buick that thought it was an Audi, your chance has finally arrived. And it’s no longer the punchline to a joke!

New Buick Gauges Dealer Interest on Verano Trim Levels

A few years ago, who would have ever imagined that Buick would be enjoying the success it is today. Its image is on the mend and products like the Enclave, LaCrosse and Regal are doing well in the market place.

It appears that Buick is getting the right product and positioning in the future to succeed as well – the eAssist LaCrosse model looks to be a highly-competitive and compelling model for the brand.

Next up for Buick is the addition of a new small-car. This is a difficult area to tread for a resurgent Buick. While Buick could be ahead of the competition in introducing a small car, it has to be done right.

For feedback on trim levels, Buick is going to dealers about the new model. In October, Buick showed a teaser of the car, dubbed Verano.

GMInsideNews has the scoop, showing the text of the dealer letter. Perhaps the most important detail is the car’s standard engine – differentiating it from the Cruze it gets GM’s 2.4-liter Ecotec making 180 horsepower.

The base model Cruze would start at around $20,900, topping out at around $26,200 for the top end model. We think in order to be positioned as a premium model, Buick should set the base price higher offer some things like high-intensity discharge headlamps, leather seats and push button starter standard.

What do you think? Head over to GMInsideNews to check out the full information and then post your thoughts in the comments section. Buick is likely looking for feedback, as it is currently in in the decision phase of deciding where to position the new Verano.

2011 Buick Regal Sport Sedan Aesthetics 2.0L Turbo Engine V-6, four-Cylinder.

2011 Buick Regal Sport Sedan

Armed with turbocharged horsepower the 2011 Buick Regal, a driver-selectable suspension system and a firm, European-tuned chassis, it delivers a driving experience that rivals the best import sport sedans in the segment.
"The 2011 Buick Regal is like nothing you've ever experienced from this brand," said Susan Docherty, general manager of Buick GMC. "The Buick Regal is the next chapter in Buick's transformation and will expand the portfolio to include a sport sedan."
The new Buick Regal arrives in the second quarter of 2010, with its sights aimed squarely on competitors like the Acura TSX and Volvo S60. It has a longer wheelbase and greater trunk volume than those vehicles, along with standard features - including a six-speed automatic transmission, 18-inch wheels and OnStar - that aren't offered standard on either competitor.
The Buick Regal's development is rooted in Germany, where the globally led engineering team created the award-winning Opel Insignia - the 2009 European Car of the Year. The Insignia has garnered more than 31 prestigious awards and is the best-selling midsize sedan in Europe. Buick Regal will bring all of Insignia's award-winning design, technology and European-inspired performance capabilities to the American market.
2011 Buick Regal Sport Sedan

The Buick Regal has already been a success on another continent, in China. It went on sale in December 2008 and more than 64,000 Regals have been sold there. Enthusiastic customers cite its sculpted, flowing design and responsive performance as the top reasons for purchase.
The Buick Regal's sleek design blends the sweeping silhouette and proportions of a coupe in a progressive package that suggests motion from all angles. Great attention to detail complements that aggressive styling, with tailored applications of Buick's signature design cues, such as the waterfall grille, select use of chrome trim and superior fit and finish of the exterior panels.
The car's performance-oriented spirit is also conveyed in sleek, sculpted body-side detail and aggressive headlamps that further suggest motion. At the rear, an abbreviated deck and tucked-in body panels are the hallmarks of a contemporary sport sedan, with bold taillamps and their intricate lighting elements reinforcing Buick Regal's attention to detail. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard.
"There is great design harmony between the exterior and interior," said Cafaro. "The feeling of flow and motion carries through in an engaging manner that makes you want to take the Buick Regal out to your favorite twisting road to see what it can do."
The Buick Regal's finely crafted, sporty and well-appointed interior builds on the exceptional attention to detail found in the Enclave and LaCrosse, blending signature styling cues with contemporary sport sedan aesthetics.
2011 Buick Regal Sport Sedan

Unique with its all-four-cylinder powertrain, the Buick Regal relies on the excellent horsepower-per-liter ratio of the Ecotec engine family to deliver smart, on-demand performance that is also very efficient.
Both the standard 2.4L engine and the available 2.0L turbo use direct injection technology to optimize performance, reduce emissions and maximize fuel efficiency. The 2.4L is the same engine offered in the Buick LaCrosse, but in the smaller, lighter Buick Regal, it delivers more agile performance. The 2.0L turbo cements the sport sedan credibility of the Buick Regal, with on-demand power comparable to a V-6, but the inherent efficiency of a four-cylinder. To ensure responsive power across the rpm range, the 2.0L turbo uses a twin-scroll turbocharger that builds power quickly at lower rpm.
2011 Buick Regal Sport Sedan

Distinct, uniquely calibrated six-speed automatic transmissions are paired with each engine. Both offer driver shift control that enhances the sporty driving feel of the Buick Regal.
Buick Regal's Interactive Drive Control System chassis technology (available on models with the available 2.0L turbo engine) offers enhanced vehicle stability and greater driving safety. It is designed to change the personality of the car based on the personality of the driver.
